PROPOSALS DUE MAY 8TH

Hello all!

Key Components of the final event were discussed in last week's meeting:
  • May 30th is the day of event
  • several people have interesting ideas for works to take place en route (on the trolley, at stops), the logistics of which need to be refined
  • the timeline is short, and thus some concepts and works should be embraced for their immediacy and not demonized for their (perhaps) lack of thorough interrogation! (I realize this might be just my opinion... :)
  • works must involve two components if placed in AgitProp or Lui, there must be another work at the other respective location. What does this look like and why? this is the big question...
  • there is a possibility to form another, similar but more involved and planned, event in the winter- one that can reach deeper into some ideas you may address now, and possibly involve a wider range of artists from San Diego and Tijuana...
  • we need motivated volunteers to help chaperone people in small groups to travel from AgitProp, onto the bus and trolley, and across to Lui
Another recent development... swine flu. How may this effect our event? How do we convince people from conservo-San Diego to go to Tijuana?

Proposals
So, with these things in mind, please think about your artistic projects and send a (at least) 250 word (no much more than 500 word) statement to propose your idea. Images are helpful. Include your concept, any size particulars you may know, and where and how you ideally want the work displayed. This statement will be used in our proposal packet when I crawl around to beg for spare change to help us promote this event. Also, the statement will eventually be used in a catalog (which will not be completed until the next event possibly in the winter) so write well!

Also, included in your proposal, it is necessary to tell us how you can spend some time nurturing this event to its fruition. Examples:
  • help with updating website (currently made by Chris Head)
  • designing postcards
  • designing poster image
  • public relations- sending email invites, possibly working with Sheena here at UCSD to help with a small mailing
  • organizing and informing responsible volunteers (for chaperones)
  • some other thing you think is important... perhaps finding sponsors (like cafe's to help with food or drink to promote their coolness)

PROPOSALS DUE FRIDAY, MAY 8TH
on the blog, emailed, or printed and delivered to my mailbox or the delicate hands of Zac or me.

Good Luck with your brainstorming!

yay blog!

Hi blog!
Two weeks... so proposals by May 5? Cinco de mayo!!!

tacos, tijuana, tecate, tequila, tasty tacos...

some interesting wikipedia quotes (what english speakers think tj is)

"Currently, the Tijuana metropolitan area is the sixth-largest in Mexico, with a population of 1,483,992. The San Diego-Tijuana Metropolitan Area is the 14th largest metropolitan area in North America, at 4,922,723. Tijuana is one of the fastest-growing cities in Mexico."

And a superiority complex is certainly present by the writers, we should edit this...

"Graffiti is widespread in Tijuana. It can range from free-hand writing in spray can and marker form, often carrying social or sexual commentary in English or Spanish, pictures in wheatpaste and stencils, consisting of stenciled renderings of personalities crucial to Hispanic culture from past and present eras, such as television news announcers or stars, but also extending to images of artists like Salvadore Dali. Graffiti in Tijuana may seem at first to consist largely of simplistic tags and thus not as technically evolved, colorful, or accepted in the mainstream as the "pieces" of graffiti scenes of the United States, Europe, or Japan, but large, colorful graffiti murals adorn walls from both native Tijuanense artists as well as visiting graffiti writers, especially from California. The Tijuanense art pieces show as much prowess and skill as those made by their more renowned U.S. counterparts, although illicit graffiti is strongly discouraged by the Tijuana government, as in other major metropolitan areas."

and then this is something I would be curious about, and I bet Chuck knows all about...

"Sewer

The International Boundary Wastewater Treatment Plant (IWTP) was developed as a joint project of the USA and Mexico in the mid 1980s following substantial environmental studies;[7] the plant currently treats 25 million gallons per day (mgd) directly pumped across the border from the central collection point in Mexico (Pump Station #1). When there is any flow in the river, the river diverter kicks in and diverts up to about 12-13 mgd to the IWTP. The totals from either must not exceed 25 mgd, based on a monthly average (permit conditions) although the IWTP can treat sustained flows up to 45mgd daily and peaks of 70 or so for a short period. The diverter is regularly sending approximately six to eight mgd daily to the IWTP."
